The Foundation started expanding its activities soon after its formation on March 7, 1993, by bringing out a scientific journal called the Journal of the Indian Geographical Foundation. The title was later changed to Practising Geographer in the year 2003 with a special issue on SAARC countries.
Practising Geographer is a biannual peer-reviewed publication containing research papers, articles, and scientific observations by scholars, researchers, and investigators in any branch of Geography and its allied disciplines. Professor Arabinda Biswas, the founder Editor, believed that the most effective way of achieving the objectives of the Foundation was by publishing a journal containing the best work done by young geographers.
The first volume (Volume 1, Winter 1994) was a felicitation volume in honor of Professor Satyesh Chakraborty, focusing on Watershed Management, Cultural Landscapes, and the Role of Women in Tripura's Chakma Society.
Following the sad passing of Professor Biswas on October 26, 2001, editorial responsibility transitioned to Dr. Arun Kumar Singh from Volumes 8-9 onwards, who continues to guide the publication to this day.
The journal has a stellar track record of timely publications, including a special issue (Vol. 10, Winter 2003) on SAARC countries with contributions from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan, and the Silver Jubilee publication (Vol. 21, 2017). The journal maintains high academic standards with ISSN 0975-3850 and is enlisted in the Indian Citation Index.
