Foundation of Practising Geographers, formerly known as Indian Geographical Foundation, was established in the year 1993 by Dr. Arun Kumar Singh, Dr. Ashoke Kumar Sen, and Professor Arabinda Biswas in the City of Joy, Kolkata. Originally registered at the residence of Dr. Arun Kumar Singh in Bijoygarh, Kolkata, the registered office was later shifted to 662 Picnic Garden Road, Kolkata 700039, where it functions actively to this day with the broad objective of publishing high-impact academic publications.
It was envisioned as an academic mouthpiece that acts as a launchpad for young Geographers, natural scientists, and social scientists to publish their findings, successfully breaking the rigid boundaries of traditional disciplines—specifically Anthropology, Sociology, History, Economics, Linguistics, Social-Economic Development, and Environmental Sciences.
With these ideals, the Foundation published its maiden volume, titled Journal of the Indian Geographical Foundation, in 1994. The inaugural articles were primarily dedicated to understanding the challenges of marginalized communities and underdeveloped regions. This first volume was dedicated to Prof. Satyesh Chakraborty, one of the most accomplished and visionary geographers of India.
The registered logo of the Foundation is the "Drifting Pangaea". It is printed on all official letterheads, documents, and publications. The Foundation of Practising Geographers is a non-governmental, non-profit, and apolitical scientific organization located in Kolkata, West Bengal, with its operational scope extending across the whole of India.
